Restaurants in the village

Whymper stube

A traditional Swiss restaurant specialising in all things cheese – raclette, fondue etc. The meat fondue is also recommended; service is relaxed and friendly.  The restaurant is always full and has a real buzz and energy about it.

Chez Gaby

A traditional grill restaurant you’ll notice the lack of kitchen, with meat cooked in a corner – usually on an open fire – and the dishes washed up in another corner.  We can recommend the chateaubriand!

Shaferstube

Set at the bottom of the Hotel Julen, the Shaferstube is cozy and welcoming with sheepskin on every chair and bench. Their specialty is lamb reflecting the family’s sheep farming business. Burger, sausages and ragù are made with lamb meat from their farm. They also have their raclette cheese made by local cheese makers with their own cows’ milk.

Le Gitan

Located opposite the Hotel Poste in the centre of Zermatt, Le Gitan Grill is a small romantic restaurant focusing on meat and fish cooked over a wood fire. It’s one of the best grill restaurants in town.

Hotel Post

The hotel post is situated in the centre of Zermatt and includes The Brown Cow pub on the ground floor.  A relaxed traditional pub serving burgers and hot dogs this is a useful spot for a quick bite to eat.  You can also access The Spaghetti Factory from here – an Italian restaurant offering good pizza and pasta if you need a break from the traditional swiss food.

Fuchs bakery

These bakeries are scattered around the village but there is one located on the road that follows the train tracks from the river up to the station.  This café has a lovely sun terrace where you can enjoy a morning cup of coffee.  Serving delicious pastries, breakfast, and simple lunches it is a useful spot if you are down the mountain for the day.

Stephanies creperie

There comes a point where you can’t do Alpine food anymore and you’ll need a break from cheese fondue and rosti (maybe not for long though). Perhaps that explains a never-ending long line outside this tiny crepe stand that you’ll find just before the hotel post on the opposite side of the road as you walk up from the station.  Delicious sweet and savoury crepes, a hit with children and adults alike!
